What is IIISLA?

The Indian Institute of Insurance Surveyors and Loss Assessors (IIISLA) is the professional body for insurance surveyors and loss assessors in India. It was established on 4 October 2005 as a company under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 (equivalent to a Section 8 non-profit company today), and was promoted by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). Its broad purpose is to raise professional standards in surveying and loss assessment through education, training, a code of conduct, and member development.

Legal status & standing

IIISLA is an IRDAI-promoted Section 8 (non-profit) company — not a statutory authority in itself, but closely linked to the regulator. In 2023 the Competition Commission of India (CCI) closed a complaint against IRDAI and IIISLA, holding that their functions are regulatory in nature and therefore outside the Competition Act. The CCI noted that the requirement of IIISLA membership for obtaining and renewing a surveyor & loss assessor licence is mandated by IRDAI.

Please verify the current position. The mandatory-membership requirement has been contested and the surveyor regulations have been revisited by an IRDAI working group, so rules can change. Always confirm the latest requirements on the official IRDAI and IIISLA websites before acting.

What IIISLA does

  • Training & education — seminars, lectures, practical training programmes and skill upgrades for members.
  • Professional examinations and knowledge standards for the profession.
  • Code of conduct & ethics — developed and administered with IRDA's concurrence.
  • Guidance notes, manuals and periodicals for members.
  • Membership & professional community across zones and states.

Note that the licence itself is granted by IRDAI (not IIISLA), and the surveyors' entrance examination is conducted through the Insurance Institute of India (III). IIISLA is the professional membership body alongside this.

How to become a licensed insurance surveyor in India

Licensing is handled by IRDAI under the Insurance Surveyors and Loss Assessors Regulations. In outline, the path is:

Enrol as a trainee surveyor through IRDAI's online (BAP) portal and complete the required practical training under a licensed surveyor.
Pass the surveyors' examination conducted via the Insurance Institute of India (III) in your chosen department(s) — e.g. motor, fire, marine, miscellaneous.
Apply for a fresh licence (individual or corporate) on the IRDAI portal, and renew it as required.
Maintain professional standing — including IIISLA membership where required, and the applicable code of conduct.
Eligibility, departments, exam syllabus and fees change from time to time. For the exact, current process, use the official IRDAI portal and the links below — this page is a general guide only.
